So, you’re looking for information on Texas Poker Strategy. Well, let me first start off by saying that there are many different strategies you can use for different situations, different levels of experience, and perhaps who you’re playing against. I’m going to assume, for this article, that you are looking for a basic strategy.
Most experts agree that the best Texas Poker Strategy to use when you are first starting to play Texas Holdem is what is called a tight/aggressive style. What this means is that you will wait for premium hands in almost every situation before you put any chips into the pot. However, once you put them in, play them aggressively. This is a great beginner’s tactic to use because you can get a better feel for the game while not playing too many hands. Most beginners make the mistake of playing too many hands and this can easily be taken advantage of.
So what is a premium hand? Well obviously AA and KK are the two best two hands you can start with, but they aren’t the only ones. QQ and AK can be considered premium hands as well. Be very careful if you decide to play JJ or lower, especially from early position, because they can be very tricky to play and you could be easily dominated. Also be careful with AK, better known as big slick. If you don’t hit the flop, proceed cautiously. If you do hit it, play it aggressively. If you get someone pushing back, be sure to be aware of the board. If there are straight or flush draws out there you have a decision to make. If you feel you can get them off their draw, you will probably want to re-raise aggressively. If they seem to be a loose or manic type player, you’re probably better off letting it go or it could cost you a lot of chips. Position is also very important to be aware of when first starting to learn the Texas Poker Strategy.
Hand value increases the closer you get to the button because there are fewer players left to act behind you which reduces your risk substantially if you want to bluff or play a less than premium hand. For example, it’s almost never the right play to play any ace lower than AK in the first couple of positions. These would be the two spots just to the left of the dealer. However, if you’re the button (dealer), or one off the button, you could play some of these weaker aces. Again, this has a lot to do with who is yet to act behind you and what type of players they are. In addition, the closer you are to the button, the more you can start playing your lower pairs such as JJ, 1010, and perhaps 99. I wouldn’t play much more than that when first starting out.
